Dietrich Metal
Cinema fans over six decades will surely remember the name of Edith Head when the credits rolled down following some of the most memorable films of the time. She became one of Hollywood’s most famous costumers, triumphing in a field dominated by men in earlier decades.
Early Years
Head was born Edith Claire Posener in San Bernadino, California to Anna and Max Posener in 1897. When her parents divorced and her mother remarried, the girl took her stepfather’s surname of Spare. She had an excellent brain and earned her bachelor’s degree from UCLA and a master’s from Stanford University, where she majored in languages. She met and married Charles Head, a traveling salesman for a metals company in 1923. Sadly, the marriage failed due to her husband’s drinking problems. They separated, but only divorced in 1938.
Paramount Pictures
In 1923, Head answered an advertisement for a sketch artist at the Famous Players-Lasky (later Paramount) film studio. Harold Greer, who hired her, recognised the young designer’s talent for creative costume, and she was soon given her own assignments. Head went on to work for Paramount, becoming its head designer.
