Bodybuilding Competition Dieting

Okay, let's set you up to fail. Sounds bad, right? For obvious reasons, we attach a negative connotation to the word failure in our everyday lives. However, in the world of weight training and bodybuilding, failure can be a very good thing. Some trainers and writers refer to failure in exercise terms as "positive failure". I am going to assume we are all tough enough to handle the word failure without trying to jazz it up with extra adjectives.

How Does Failure Help?

So why is failure important to you as a hardgainer trying to put on muscle mass? There are a number of ways in which training to failure can be beneficial, but the one general goal we are trying to achieve is breaking the "plateau". In other words we are trying to exert our muscles to the extent that we are setting new personal bests in the gym on a consistent basis. This doesn't mean each trip to the gym we throw another plate on our bench press successfully. Progress takes proper work and incremental increases to reach the next level. Just remember, if the weight is increasing, so is your strength, and therefore your muscles. This won't happen overnight, but consistent training WILL accomplish your goal.
