The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first oral treatment for multiple sclerosis on September 22, 2010.
The drug FTY720, also known as fingolimod, and marketed by Novartis as Gilenya, is designed for use with multiple sclerosis patients with the relapsing form of the disease, commonly know as relapsing-remitting MS, or RRMS.
But the FDA has also noted that there are potentially serious side effects, including lung and eye problems.
